In 1986, the Fairview Park Education Foundation established its first scholarship.  Since then, we have been awarding scholarships to outstanding Fairview High School seniors.  

This year, the Foundation proudly awards the following 30 scholarships totaling $31,500 and 9 Polaris Trade Grants totaling $2,700:

Fairview Park Education Foundation’s 2024 Scholarship Recipients:

Dr. John Babel Memorial Scholarship — Established in 2016 in honor of the 3rd Superintendent of the Fairview Park City Schools. Dr. Babel was born in upstate New York, and upon his high school graduation, he was intent on staying on the family farm. His father encouraged him to continue schooling, pursuing a teaching certificate and later a master’s degree. He was the first in his family to attain a college degree and continued to complete his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University. He taught at Cleveland State University for 25 years and was a member of the Rotarian Club for over 35 years. Dr. Babel’s life was changed by those in education, and he believed in the value of lifelong learning. 

The $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a senior pursuing a career in education. 

This year’s recipient is Erich Malek

Erich will graduate Summa Cum Laude with a GPA of 4.16. He has chosen to attend Bowling Green State University for his future studies. Erich was a member of the National Honor Society for his Junior and Senior years. He was also involved in the Broadcasting Club for two years serving one year as President. He was also a member of the President’s Club. Erich was highly active in the Boy Scouts of America during his Freshman through Senior years. He was a member of the Boys Varsity Soccer team for 4 years serving as captain his Senior year. He also played Boys Basketball during his Freshman and Sophomore years. Erich has received many athletic awards. Erich is looking forward to a career in Physical and Health Education and later as an athletic director. He would like to make a strong impact on the lives of students and the way teachers and coaches have positively impacted his life.

Dr. John Babel’s daughter Donna VanRooy presented the scholarship to Erich.

Frank W. Barr Memorial Scholarship — Established in 1990 in honor of the 2nd Superintendent of the Fairview Park City Schools who served from 1964 to 1979. Dr. Barr was a member of many professional educational organizations as well as many community groups. 

The $500 scholarship is awarded to a senior pursuing a humanities or liberal arts major at a college or university. 

This year’s recipient is Abigail Barnhart

Abigail will graduate Summa Cum Laude with a GPA of 4.01. At this time, she is undecided on which university she will be attending but has many options available to her. Abigail was a member of the National Honor Society for her Junior and Senior years. She played Girls Varsity Soccer for 4 years, serving as Captain her Senior year. She also played Softball for 4 years. Abigail participated in Varsity Bowling her Senior year serving as Team Captain and MVP. Abigail has received numerous Athletic honors and recognitions. Outside of school, she was active in Young Life for 4 years. Abigail plans to pursue a degree in Forensic Psychology. She would like to help others achieve their goals and understand criminal behavior and mental health.

Roger Canfield Baseball ScholarshipEstablished in 2024 through donations from Fairview High School Alumni baseball players wanting to recognize their coach. Roger worked at the Fairview Park City Schools for thirty-eight years as a social studies/economics teacher and JV/Varsity coach in multiple sports, one being baseball. He participated as a youth advisor with the Recreation Center providing youth coaching and summer sports clinics. He also managed the fields at Bohlken Park.

The $500 scholarship is to be awarded to an outstanding varsity baseball athlete showing great leadership, respect, and acknowledgment for outstanding sportsmanship during their sports career. A minimum of at least two years in the sport is required including senior year.

This year’s recipient is Nolan Reis

Nolan will graduate Cum Laude with a GPA of 3.69. He plans to attend Ohio University. He has been an active member of Key Club, and Video Production where he was a Sports Anchor and did the Food Segments. Nolan was the creator of Podcast, where he was involved in his Junior and Senior years. Nolan played Varsity Baseball for 4 years. He was the starting second baseman and Captain his Senior year. Nolan also played Football for 4 years where he again was Captain. Nolan played Basketball for 3 years. Nolan plans on majoring in Sports Management with a certificate in Sales. His long-range goal is a job in medical sales.

Mary Lou Chalfant Memorial Social Studies Scholarship — Mary Lou was a social studies teacher at Fairview High School for many years. She was an avid supporter of the Fairview High School arts programs, especially the theater department. She never missed the opportunity to attend a performance during her tenure at the high school. When she retired the scholarship was established.

The $500 scholarship is awarded to an outstanding social studies student pursuing a career in Social Sciences or Social Studies Education or someone active in the theater programs at Fairview High School. 

This year’s recipient is Addison Loescher

Addison will graduate Summa Cum Laude with a GPA of 4.28. She plans on attending the College of Wooster. Addison has completed many AP and CCP classes. She has been involved in the Chamber and String Orchestras for 4 years, as well as the TRI-M Music Honors Society in her Sophomore, Junior, and Senior years. Addison was a member of the National Honor Society her Junior and Senior years as well as the Business Professionals of America the same years. Addison was involved in Artist in the Community where she designed and painted the crossing guard booths and mural in the school and the upcoming firehouse mural. Addison has received many awards and recognitions from her classes and competitions while at Polaris. Addison is currently planning to major in either economics or social work. Whatever career path she ends up on she would like to continue to pursue the arts in her spare time.

Bruce Linden Cherkala Memorial Scholarship — Established in 1991 by the Cherkala Family in memory of their son, Bruce, who graduated from Fairview High School in 1968. While at FHS, Bruce was an honor student and a letterman in football and tennis. Bruce graduated from Denison University and then Case Western Reserve School of Medicine with an M.D. degree. Bruce passed away suddenly in 1982. 

This $500 scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior who will pursue science or mathematics at a college or university.

This year’s recipient is Miranda Wasco

Miranda will graduate Summa Cum Laude with a GPA of 4.31 and was declared an AP Scholar with Distinction. She plans on attending John Carroll University. Miranda has been very active in the Marching Band for 4 years. She was also in the Jazz Band for 3 years. Miranda was in Stagecrafters her Junior and Senior years as well as being inducted into the Thespian Honors Society her Senior year. Miranda was involved in the Science Olympiad and the Academic Team. Miranda also played Tennis in her Junior and Senior years. She has received many awards for her flute performances as well as awards at the Science Olympiad. Miranda would like to pursue a major in Biology, specifically in Genetic Studies. She would like to continue her studies with either a master’s or a doctorate.

Maureen Cundiff Memorial Scholarship — Established in 2007 through donations made by the Fairview Park community and friends for the Cundiff Family. Maureen was a very active person in the community, including an elected member of the Fairview Park City Schools Board of Education, president of PTA, member of the Gemini Committee, and many more organizations. Maureen coached many years of girls’ softball and was an avid softball player herself.

The $500 scholarship is to be awarded to an outstanding female varsity athlete showing great leadership, respect, and acknowledgments for outstanding sportsmanship during their sports career. Softball or Cross Country are preferred but not necessary.

This year’s recipient is Samantha Reitz

Samantha will graduate Magna Cum Laude with a GPA of 3.94. She will be attending Ohio University with a major in Communication Studies at the Ohio University Scripps College of Communications. She is passionate about exploring new and innovative avenues in advertising and public relations. She would like to be in an environment that prioritizes community and amplifies women’s voices. Samantha has been involved in the Student Council for 4 years, serving as Class Vice President. She was a member of the National Honor Society and Key Club her Senior year. She was in Chorale for 4 years and in the Show Choir her Senior year. Samantha was a Varsity Softball player for 4 years, serving as Team Captain. She received awards for her softball experience. She also participated in Bowling, Swim Team, and Volleyball.

 Laura Dean Memorial Scholarship — Established in March 2001 through a bequest of funding from the estate of a former Fairview Park teacher and former Fairview High principal, Laura Dean. Ms. Dean’s teaching and administrative career in the Fairview Park City Schools began in 1929 and lasted for 45 years. Her first assignment was teaching mathematics to elementary students and later served as the second principal of Fairview High School. It was at her request that scholarships be given to young women pursuing a career in math.

Two $1,000 scholarships are awarded each year to deserving graduating female seniors pursuing careers in mathematics or the field of applied mathematics.

This year’s first recipient is Nola Foote  

Nola will graduate Summa Cum Laude with a GPA of 4.14. She will be attending the University of Connecticut to study in Allied Health Sciences. She will also be a rower while there. Nola was a member of the Student Council for 4 years. She was President and founder of the Science Olympiad Club for 2 years. Nola was a member of the National Honor Society in her Junior and Senior years, as well as a member of Key Club in those years. She was in the Tri-M Music Honor Society during her Sophomore, Junior, and Senior years. Nola was involved with Cleveland Foundry Juniors Rowing for 3 years where she was Captain her Senior year. She was also involved with Swimming during her Freshman, Sophomore, and Senior years. Nola participated in Girls Soccer for 2 years. She has received athletic honors and awards as well as music awards. She was an AP Scholar with Honors recipient. Nola plans to continue her career to a doctorate in Physical Therapy. She would like to work as a pediatric physical therapist.

This year’s second recipient is Emma Bias 

Emma will graduate 10th in the class, and Summa Cum Laude with a GPA of 4.32. She plans on attending The Ohio State University. Emma was on the Drill Team for 3 years and was active in dance for 4 years. Emma is an employee of Goldfish Swim School. She does a variety of jobs from lifeguarding to front desk work and supervision. Emma will be majoring in Biology on the pre-med track. She would like to become a pediatrician because she loves working with children.

Keith Devine Family Firefighting/Criminal Justice ScholarshipEstablished in 2024 by Keith Devine to encourage more people to commit to giving of themselves to protect the life and property of others. Both firefighting and criminal justice are very satisfying and rewarding careers. Keith was a thirty-year Cleveland Firefighter, and his dad was a twenty-five-year Cleveland Police Officer. He realizes firsthand the importance of public service in our communities, and he wants to assist in supporting these students to become successful after graduation.

The $1,000 scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student pursuing a career in firefighting or criminal justice.

This year’s recipient is Benjamin Conley

Benjamin has attended Polaris during his Junior and Senior years. He is enrolled in the CNC Machine Trades program. After graduation, he plans to attend Tri-C to enroll in the EMT/Firefighter program. Ben played football and wrestled at Fairview High School all four years as well as played both in Middle School.

Keith Devine presented the scholarship to Benjamin.

Shirley Docherty Memorial Scholarship — Established in 2013 by her children, Denise Devine, and David in memory of their mother. Shirley was a homemaker most of her life. Upon graduating from high school, she drew maps for the War Department. After the war, she was employed by NACA (a forerunner of NASA), where she worked as a graphic artist in the Aircraft Engine Research Lab. 

The $500 scholarship is awarded to an outstanding art student pursuing a degree in Art/Graphic Arts at a college or university.

This year’s recipient is Margaret Reinke

Margaret will graduate Summa Cum Laude with a GPA of 4.02. She will be attending Denison University where she will pursue a double major in Studio Art and Psychology. She would like to become an Art Therapist. Art is very important to her mental health, and she would like to help share that with others as a healthy outlet for their emotions. Margaret has been involved with the Student Council for 4 years, serving her Senior year as Executive Secretary. She was involved at Polaris with Student Ambassadors as well as the Polaris Yearbook. Margaret was on the Swim and Dive Teams for 4 years. Her Senior year she was the Girl’s Captain. She was involved in the Bohlken Park Mural project her Sophomore year and the Fire Department mural her Senior year. She has been awarded the AP Scholar with Honors, as well as the National Technical Honors Society. She has received many swimming awards. Margaret has received the ServeOhio Community Impact Award and Merit Community Service Award.

Fairview High School Class of 1973 Alumni Scholarship — Established in 2024, in honor of their 50th Fairview High School class reunion. The Alumni of the Class of 1973 generously donated the money for a scholarship to use towards the college education of future FHS graduates.

The $1,000 scholarship is being awarded to a senior pursuing a career in education. 

This year’s recipient is Molly Adomaites

Molly will graduate Magna Cum Laude with a GPA of 3.85.  She will be attending Baldwin Wallace University. Molly has been involved in Stagecrafters since the 6th grade, and the Thespian Society her Sophomore through Senior years. She has been in the Chorale and Scarlet Singers for 4 years serving as Vice President her Senior year. She has been a member of the Tr-M Music Honors Society for 3 years. Molly was involved with the Drill Team her Senior year. Molly would like to be a music educator and to show students how music can positively affect their lives.

FHS Class of 1973 Alumni Dan Sewell and Gail Glamm, presented the scholarship to Molly.

Fairview High School Class of 1983 Alumni Scholarship – Established in 2024, in honor of their 40th Fairview High School class reunion. The Alumni of the Class of 1983 generously donated the money for a scholarship to use towards the college education of future FHS graduates.

The $1,000 scholarship is to be awarded to a student who has shown outstanding overall academic, community, and school achievement. The scholarship is available to a student who will be attending a four-year college or a two-year technical college.

This year’s recipient is Tyson Crandall

Tyson will graduate Summa Cum Laude, second in his class with a GPA of 4.46.  He plans on attending The George Washington University. While there he plans on participating in Track and Field and Cross Country. Tyson is involved with the JEDI Task Force and Effective Leadership Academy. He has been in the National Honor Society for 2 years, serving as Secretary. He was in the Student Council and Editor of the Yearbook Committee. Tyson has been involved in Outdoor and Indoor Track and Field for 4 years. He ran Cross Country for 4 years. He was also involved in Golf and Basketball. Tyson has received many honors in athletics as well as AP College Board Perfect Score Recipient, AP Scholar with Distinction, AP Capstone Diploma, and AP Scholar with Honor. Tyson plans to major in Data Science. He hopes to impact either the political or health science world.

Fairview High School Class of 2020 (COVID-19) Scholarship — Established in 2020 by the Fairview High School Class of 2020 After Prom Committee through a donation of funds that were set aside for the Class of 2020 to use towards their prom and after prom. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, students were unable to have the same prom and after-prom that previous graduates enjoyed. The After Prom Committee generously donated the money for a scholarship to use towards the college education of future FHS graduates.

The $500 scholarship is awarded to a student with a hardworking spirit who has persevered through obstacles, possibly COVID-19 related. This scholarship honors the many challenges the FHS 2020 graduates endured during their senior year.

This year’s recipient is Gabriela Davenport

Gabriela will graduate Summa Cum Laude with a GPA of 4.29. She plans on attending either Ohio University or The Ohio State University where she will major in Marketing with a digital/social media focus. Her long-range goal is to work for a professional sports team running their marketing campaign. Gabriela was involved with the Warrior Athletic Council and the First Ring Leadership Academy Student Leaders. Gabriela played basketball for 4 years and was team captain in her Sophomore, Junior, and Senior years. She played Varsity Tennis her Sophomore, Junior, and Senior years, being Team Captain her Senior year. She also was involved in Track and Field in her Sophomore year. She has received athletic awards and leadership awards. COVID found Gabriela thriving with self-paced, independent learning. She was able to be more efficient with her time. It inspired her to start taking CCP classes in addition to all her other classes to prepare her for college.

Fairview High School Class of 2023 Scholarship — Established in 2024 by the Fairview High School Class of 2023 After Prom Committee through money that remained from their class fundraising. The Alumni of the Class of 2023 generously donated the money for a scholarship to use towards the college education of future FHS graduates.

The $500 scholarship is awarded to a hardworking student with a median GPA (2.5-3.0) who has been involved in at least one high school club or activity for at least two years of their high school career including their senior year.

This year’s recipient is Jessica Paracsi

Jessica will be attending Cuyahoga Community College. After two years there she plans on attending Cleveland State University. Jessica was involved in Chorale for 3 years, and in Show Choir her Junior and Senior years. During her Sophomore and Junior years, she was involved in the Drill team. Jessica was Captain of the Girls Golf Team where she participated during her Junior and Senior years. She was named Most Valuable Player. She has received awards in Word Processing, Economic Research, Financial Portfolio, and Stock Market Portfolio. Jessica plans on majoring in Business Management/HR Management with a minor in Psychology.

Maxine Field Memorial Scholarship —Established in 2016 by the Field children in memory of their mother Maxine A. Field (nee Waack). Maxine was a proud resident of Fairview Park. She graduated from FHS in 1948 where she was head majorette for the marching band. In 1948 she represented Fairview Park and the State of Ohio as Miss Ohio in the Miss America pageant. In 1966, Maxine again represented Fairview Park and Ohio as Mrs. Ohio in the Mrs. America pageant. Maxine was a model and fashion coordinator for many local stores and malls. She also enjoyed singing, dancing, and the theater where she acted in many local little theater productions and musicals. 

The $1,000 scholarship is to be awarded to a deserving graduating senior who will be pursuing a career in either the fashion industry or music (especially theater, singing, and/or dancing).

This year’s recipient is Graycen Russell

Graycen will graduate Summa Cum Laude with a GPA of 4.1. She will be attending the University of South Carolina where she will major in Music Industry Studies. She hopes to be able to manage artists and labels. She was a member of the National Honor Society during her Junior and Senior years. Graycen participated in Stagecrafters her Sophomore and Senior years and the Thespian Society her Senior year. She was a member of the Drill team for 4 years, serving as Co-Captain in her Junior and Senior years. She was a Varsity Cheerleader during her Sophomore year serving as Co-Captain. She was active in the President’s Club for 2 years. She has been involved in Competitive Dance for the last 4 years. She has been the lead performer in Sister Act and Mamma Mia.

Dorothy Graab Memorial Scholarship — Established in 2013 by the children of Donald and Janet Graab Miller in memory of their mother Dorothy Graab. After high school graduation, she attended Northwestern University where she majored in chemistry. Dorothy continued to also study piano until college graduation in 1948. She then joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), a forerunner of NASA, as a chemist at the Lewis Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio.
Dorothy was an active volunteer in civic and community groups. She served as PTA president multiple times and was an elected Fairview Park City Schools Board of Education member, ultimately serving as president. A lifelong lover of music, Dorothy was an accomplished piano player who took great pleasure and pride over the years in supporting the Cleveland Orchestra.

The $750 scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior who is active in one or more music programs but is not necessarily pursuing that at a college or university.

This year’s recipient is Ella Johnson

Ella will graduate Magna Cum Laude with a 4.44 GPA and plans to attend The Ohio State University majoring in Environmental Science. She was highly active in the FHS music and theater departments through the Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, Orchestra, and Stagecrafters. Ella held several leadership roles within the band and was a member of the Science Olympiad team. Additionally, she interned with Holden Arboretum’s Community Ecology Department, volunteered for a summer with the Cleveland Botanical Gardens, and worked part-time. Ella has earned the honor of AP Scholar with Distinction and was awarded the AP Capstone Diploma.

Judson Graab Memorial Scholarship — Established in 2013 by the children of Donald and Janet Graab Miller in memory of their father Judson Graab. He attended Ohio Wesleyan University where he majored in chemistry. Judson’s time at Ohio Wesleyan was interrupted by his service in the US Army during World War II. Upon graduation from college in 1948, he joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), a forerunner of NASA, as a chemist at the Lewis Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. Judson remained at NASA for his entire career, serving as the longtime head of the analytical chemistry department where he retired in 1978. 
Judson was also part of the team of parents who created the Fairview Park Band Boosters and established the annual Memorial Day Pancake Breakfast. Upon his retirement, Judson worked in the Fairview High School auto shop as a volunteer. His continued support was acknowledged by the Fairview Park Education Association with their Friend of Education Award in 1992. 

The $750 scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior who will pursue a degree in the sciences, preferably chemistry at a college or university.

This year’s recipient is Heidi Blowers

Heidi will graduate Magna Cum Laude with a 3.76 GPA and plans to study Chemical Engineering at Ohio University. Heidi participated in the Yearbook Club, Stagecrafters Light Crew, and is a member of the International Thespian Troupe. She has worked at a cosmetic company to gain experience following regulations and procedures in a professional laboratory. This work has sparked her interest in the science behind cosmetics and hopes to fabricate her own cosmetic formulas one day.

Fred J. and Betty J. Helwig Memorial Scholarship — Established in 1999 and fully funded by the Helwig children to honor their parents. The scholarships are awarded to hard-working students who demonstrate initiative, self-motivation, and a desire to succeed even though they face life-changing obstacles with which they are presented. In addition to the scholarship award, the scholarship recipient’s names will be added to a permanent plaque that hangs in the Fairview High School halls to commemorate this award.

Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded and are renewable for up to a maximum of four years of college. 

This year’s first recipient is Scarlett Loach

Scarlett will graduate Summa Cum Laude with a GPA of 4.23 and plans to attend Kent State University to pursue studies in their Art Education program within their Honors College to teach high school art and direct a theater department. She was an active participant in Stagecrafters, the International Thespian Society Troupe, Tri-M Music Honors Society, Scarlet Singers, and Chorale. Additionally, she participated in the Student Council and the Ski / Snowboard Club. Her passion for art is highlighted by her small business “Painting for Fun,” selling her work at the Westside Flea and helping paint three school crossing guard booths throughout Fairview Park. She won the Tri-C High School Rock Off Art Competition in the CD Cover category, worked part-time, participated in plays at the Clague Playhouse, and earned the AP Capstone Diploma.

This year’s second recipient is Ann Burgett

Ann will graduate Magna Cum Laude with a 3.82 GPA which includes 8 AP courses. She will pursue an Economics degree from the University of Cincinnati on the Pre-Law track. Ann was an active member of the Key Club and enjoyed tennis through the FHS team as well as at the Force Sports Tennis off-season. She has cared for an Alzheimer patient throughout her high school career which fueled her desire to become a successful lawyer to help others, especially women, feel empowered and receive the justice they deserve.

Jeanne and Michael Holick Memorial Scholarship Established originally as the Michael Holick Memorial Scholarship in 2008 by the Holick Family in memory of their father, Michael. The scholarship is also in memory of their mother Jeanne, who passed away on October 15, 2021.

Jeanne and Michael were married for 56 years and raised four children in Fairview Park. All their children were graduates of Fairview High School and Baldwin Wallace College.

Jeanne was a graduate of the Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music and taught piano in Fairview Park until she was 86. She was a great advocate of music programs at Fairview High School and local venues and always enjoyed concerts and plays.

Michael’s talents as a master finish carpenter for 56 years are appreciated today as he is responsible for building his family home and homes for his children in Fairview Park. In addition, he rebuilt the corner of West 204th Street and Lorain Road. He was also involved with many buildings, renovating and remodeling projects in the Cleveland vicinity. Michael was an active member of the Carpenters Local Union 1108 and the memory of his talents, love and support of his family, and pride in his city will shine forever.

The $500 scholarship will be awarded to a student who has been active in one or more music programs in their high school career or who will be going into the trades.

This year’s recipient is Cole Joseph

Cole will graduate Cum Laude with a 3.56 GPA with plans to attend Baldwin Wallace University studying Sports Management. He was an active member of the Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Orchestra, and Student Council. He was on the Bowling team for 4 years and was voted MVP all four years. He was also team captain for two years. During his senior year, he scored a perfect 300-game, a significant accomplishment in the sport of bowling. Cole has worked part-time in multiple jobs and volunteers at the Fairview Senior Center.

Jeanne and Michael Holick’s son Peter presented the scholarship to Cole.

Harold L. Hom Memorial Scholarship —Established in 2022 by the Hom Family in memory of Harold L. Hom who passed away on September 5, 2022. Harold was a graduate of the FHS Class of 1980. He attended The Ohio State University and Case Western Reserve University School of Law. He was an active citizen in the Fairview Park community. He volunteered for and supported numerous organizations in Fairview including the Fairview Park Education Foundation, Fairview Park Youth Association, the Fairview Alumni Association, the Fairview Summerfest Committee, and the Fairview Park Senior Center. He was the 2023 Fairview Park Citizen of the Year. He was also active with Fairview High School by volunteering at career fairs, FHS After Prom Committee, coaching mock trials, hosting homecoming float building for his children’s high school classes, and volunteering at the Fairview Track and Field Relays. He firmly believed that an individual could make a positive impact on the community and always wanted to do what he could to help future generations.

The $1000 scholarship is awarded to an outstanding graduating senior who has academic achievement, as well as community and school participation, and will be attending higher education. They show the capacity to make an outstanding contribution and impact on their community. 

This year’s recipient is Andrew Hille

Andrew will graduate Summa Cum Laude with a 4.37 GPA and plans to attend the University of Cincinnati to pursue a Theater Design and Production major with a focus on Stage Management at their incredibly selective Conservatory of Music. Andrew was active in the Band, Student Council, and Stagecrafters including being Stage Manager for the past four productions. He was inducted into the National Honor Society as a Junior and has participated in the Tri-M Music Honor Society as well as the National Technical Honor Society and the Ski Club. Outside of school, Andrew earned his Eagle Scout rank in October 2023 in Troop 421 and is an active participant in his church Youth Group. Andrew was elected Class President, Band President, and Thespian President. He has earned the honor of AP Scholar with Distinction and was awarded the AP Capstone Diploma.

Harold L. Hom Memorial Scholarship (Fairview Park Education Foundation) — Established in 2022 by the Fairview Park Education Foundation in memory of Harold L. Hom, a husband, father, and friend to many. Harold was a graduate of the FHS Class of 1980. He attended The Ohio State University and Case Western Reserve University School of Law. He was an active citizen in the Fairview Park community. He volunteered for and supported numerous organizations in Fairview including the Fairview Park Education Foundation, Fairview Park Youth Association, the Fairview Alumni Association, the Fairview Summerfest Committee, and the Fairview Park Senior Center. He was the 2023 Fairview Park Citizen of the Year. He was also active with Fairview High School by volunteering at career fairs, FHS After Prom Committee, coaching mock trials, hosting homecoming float building for his children’s high school classes, and volunteering at the Fairview Track and Field Relays. He firmly believed that an individual could make a positive impact on the community and always wanted to do what he could to help future generations.

The $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a student who is active in contributing to the betterment of their community through volunteerism, acts of kindness, and participation in organizations or clubs that promote leadership, kindness, selflessness, and devotion to helping people.

This year’s recipient is Lauren Moll

Lauren will graduate Summa Cum Laude with a 4.19 GPA and plans to attend either The Ohio State University or the Honors College at Bowling Green State University. She ran Cross Country and Track for 3 years and participated in competitive gymnastics at Northeast Ohio Gymnastics for all 4 years. Lauren was active in the Key Club as well as volunteering at Deer Valley YMCA Family camp in their Rising Leader Program. Additionally, she helped paint a crossing guard booth and the Wings on the Middle School wall. Other volunteer work includes Seniors Helping Seniors and Bain Cabin Whoville. Lauren works part-time while earning the honor of AP Scholar with Distinction Award.

Zuhair Jallad Memorial Scholarship — Established in 2019 in Zuhair’s name by his family to honor his memory. Zuhair passed away suddenly at the beginning of his senior year at Fairview High School in the fall of 2018. Zuhair was planning to pursue a career in computer science engineering and attend a four-year college. Zuhair’s biggest dream was to make a difference in this world. Students applying for this scholarship should be enrolled in college credit plus courses and show financial need.

The $500 scholarship will be awarded to a student who has demonstrated initiative, self-motivation, and a desire to succeed. 

This year’s recipient is Jenna Stover

Jenna will graduate Magna Cum Laude with a GPA of 3.94 and plans to attend Kent State University studying Emerging Media and Technology with minors in Information Design and Computer Forensics and Security. She took advantage of the CCP program by taking ten classes for thirty college credits. Jenna was an active participant in Stagecrafters and dabbled in Marching Band, Chorale, and ice skating each for 1 year. During her Senior year, she joined both golf and bowling teams. Jenna volunteered throughout her high school years through her church Youth Group including Laundry Love, Lakewood Meals on Wheels Garden, and donating to Locks of Love. She has worked part-time and received Scholar Athlete awards as well as being inducted into Thespian Troupe 8671.

Robert V. and Rose T. Kundmueller Memorial Scholarship — Established originally as the Robert V. Kundmueller Memorial Scholarship in 1990 by the Kundmueller Family in memory of their father, Bob. The scholarship is also in memory of their mother, Rose, who passed away on November 14, 2014.

Bob and Rose became residents of Fairview Park as newlyweds in 1955, raising six children who all graduated from Fairview High School. Bob was a local Fairview Park business owner for many years.

Bob was the Fairview Park Education Foundation’s founding treasurer and trustee, a member of numerous civic organizations, and the 1987 Fairview Park Citizen of the Year recipient. Rose was actively involved in the PTA, and both were strong advocates and supporters of the Fairview Park City Schools. 

The scholarship is funded on behalf of the proceeds totaling $108,000 from the Robert V. Kundmueller Memorial Golf Tournament. This was the Foundation’s first annual fundraiser that occurred for 18 years.

The scholarship for $3,000 is awarded to a student showing outstanding academic achievement, as well as community and school participation.

This year’s recipient is Isabelle King

Isabelle will graduate Summa Cum Laude with a 4.52 GPA as class Valedictorian and intends to study Nutrition at Kent State University in hopes of bringing nutritional help to those in need. She took advantage of the CCP program by taking nine classes as well as 5 AP courses. Isabelle was active during her high school career including 2 years on the Student Council, a 2-year President of the Key Club and National Honor Society- and 1 year as Vice President. Additionally, she was on the soccer team for 4 years including as a Senior captain, track team for 3 years, and Swim team for 1 year. She was an AP Scholar with Honor awardee along with ServeOhio Community Impact and National Community Service awards.

Bob and Rose Kundmueller’s daughters, Anne Cornelius and Clare Kundmueller presented the scholarship to Isabelle.

Lewis F. Mayer Memorial Scholarship – Established in 1986 in memory of Lewis F. Mayer. He was the first superintendent of the Fairview Park City Schools, serving from 1921 to 1964. Mr. Mayer was a humanitarian of Fairview Park, an educator, and a principal in the Fairview Park City Schools.

The $500 scholarship is awarded to an outstanding senior pursuing a career in the humanities.

This year’s recipient is Kathleen Butterfield

Kathleen will graduate Summa Cum Laude with a 4.2 GPA. She plans to attend The Ohio University and study Communications with a Political Science minor in the fall to participate in Scripps in D.C. during her college years. Kathleen was active as a 4-year member of Student Council, 2-year Key Club member, and 3-years in the Ski Club. Additionally, she was on the volleyball team for 2 years and, golf and track and field each for a year. Kathleen hopes to travel for leisure, on her terms during her twenties.

Richard C. and Louise K. Nickerson Memorial Scholarship — Established in 2019 through a bequest of funding from the estate of Louise K. Nickerson. Ms. Nickerson worked her entire life and was successful at a job she loved even though she did not attend college. However, during her adult life, she realized the importance of higher education, thus her request to help provide financial aid to students attending college.

Two $1,000 scholarships are to be awarded to students who have shown outstanding overall academic/community and school achievement. These scholarships will be awarded to students attending either a two-year or four-year college.

This year’s first recipient is Rebecca Carey

Rebecca will graduate Summa Cum Laude with a 4.38 GPA and plans to study Architecture at The Ohio State University which is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board. She was a 4-season volleyball, basketball, and softball athlete serving as captain for both volleyball and basketball. Additionally, Rebecca was active in the Key Club, Yearbook Club, and the Warrior Athletic Council. She was inducted into the National Honor Society in her Junior year and volunteered frequently at her church. Her hard work was rewarded through numerous awards including the National Community Service Honor Award, GLC Scholar Athlete, Fairview Scholar Athlete as well as AP Scholar with Distinction and the AP Capstone Diploma. Rebecca has given back to Fairview Park by painting the Crossing Guard Booths and the Firehouse Mural and hopes to “continue to help others less fortunate to make them feel a little love during the tough times.”

This year’s second recipient is Ben Stoessner

Ben will graduate Summa Cum Laude with a GPA of 4.35 with plans to study Media Production at Ohio University. He participated in Warrior athletics as a member of the Cross Country, Track, Bowling, and Basketball teams earning GLC Scholar Athlete Honors in each and receiving the Matthew Biscotti Integrity Award. Throughout his high school career, Ben participated in the JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) Taskforce. During Ben’s Senior year, he became active in Stagecrafters, the Gay-Straight Alliance, Sources of Strength, the Student Council as well as the Warrior Athletic Council. He was nominated as a Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Student Visionary of the Year and balanced a part-time job. One of Ben’s fondest memories is being part of the cast of Mamma Mia this year which was his first stage appearance.

Richard Stuewe Memorial Scholarship (Fairview Park Education Foundation) — Established in 2019 by the Fairview Park Education Foundation in memory of Richard Stuewe. He was a graduate of Fairview High School and a teacher, counselor, and coach in the Fairview Park City Schools. He was an honored member of the Fairview Park Education Foundation and many other Fairview Park organizations.

The scholarship for $1,000 is awarded to a student showing outstanding academic achievement, as well as community and school participation.

This year’s recipient is Alexander Haag

Alexander will graduate Summa Cum Laude with a GPA of 4.32 and intends to pursue Computer Sciences at the University of Dayton. He was inducted into the National Honor Society his Senior year and participated in Bowling, Cross Country, and Track. Alexander was highly active outside of school with Junior Leaders, Young Life, High School Culture, and Young Men’s Bible Study and volunteered with Feeding Souls, Big Creek Missions, and Work Crew Weekend racking up nearly 4,000 hours while balancing a part-time job. He received recognition including the Merit Badge from the National Honor Society, ServeOhio Community Impact Award, Young Life Leadership Scholarship, and National Technical Honor Society as well as being a Scholar Athlete. Long-term goals include developing video games and incorporating some of his favorite things – programming, 3D modeling, and image rendering.

Richard Stuewe Memorial Scholarship (Alumni Hall of Fame) — Originally established in 2015 by the Alumni Hall of Fame and renamed in 2019 in memory of Richard Stuewe. He was a friend of many, a colleague, and Fairview High School alumni. The Alumni Hall of Fame committee every three years honors three groups from the Fairview Park City Schools – distinguished alumni, outstanding former athletes, and exceptional (retired) faculty members.

The $500 scholarship will be awarded to a senior who is pursuing a degree in the field of education.

This year’s recipient is Sophia Kensick

Sophia will graduate Summa Cum Laude with a GPA of 4.12. She plans to study Early Education at Baldwin Wallace University. She was an avid volleyball player and balanced a part-time job while taking 4 AP courses. Sophia plans to pursue a master’s degree in English to become an English specialist in elementary schools.

Debbie Tidwell Memorial Scholarship (Fairview Park Education Foundation) — Established in 2022 by the Fairview Park Education Foundation in memory of Debbie Tidwell, a wife, mother, and friend to many. Debbie was a true education advocate for children in Fairview Park, as well as in the State of Ohio. She was an active PTA member in our local Fairview Park, as well as, at the State of Ohio and National PTA levels. She served as president of our Fairview Park PTA, and many other positions during her numerous PTA years. In addition, she served on the State and National PTA boards and was the Ohio PTA President. She also served as a member of the Fairview Park City Schools Board of Education. She was an honored member of the Fairview Park Education Foundation and many other Fairview Park organizations.

The $1,000 scholarship is to be awarded to an outstanding male/female varsity soccer athlete showing great leadership, respect, and acknowledgments for outstanding sportsmanship during their sports career. Community service and volunteerism are a plus when applying for this scholarship.

This year’s recipient is Elizabeth Hille

Elizabeth will graduate Summa Cum Laude with a 4.22 GPA and plans to attend Ohio Wesleyan University to study Communications with the goal of a career in public relations. She was active in the Key Club, National Honor Society, Stagecrafters, Yearbook Club, and the Warrior Athletic Council. Elizabeth excelled in soccer where she was a 2-year captain and received numerous conference awards. Additionally, she was a member of the Basketball, Bowling, and Track and Field teams. Outside of school, she managed the West Shore Rotary Club’s social media, was the head of communications for her church, participated in her church youth group, and went on a week-long summer mission trip. Elizabeth has received numerous accolades including GLC Scholar Athlete, ServeOhio Community Impact Award, National Community Service Honors Award, and AP Scholar awards.

Debbie Tidwell’s family members Nolan Tidwell, son, Holly Rose, Nolan’s finance, and Evy Tidwell Debbie’s daughter-in-law presented the scholarship to Elizabeth.

2024 Polaris FHS Senior Trade Students Grant Program – Established in 2024 by the Alumni of the Fairview High School Classes of 1971, 1973, and 1982. A grant opportunity was established to promote and support Fairview High School graduating seniors who are pursuing a career in Welding, Precision CNC Machining, HVAC/R, Construction, and Automotive work. This financial award will also encourage and stimulate interest in these careers as well as make an important contribution to the local economy. The money will be used to purchase a significant component of their career job that will aid in what is needed for them to be successful after graduation.

2024 Polaris trade grant recipients were recognized along with FHS alumni Gail Glamm (1973), Kay Bertermann (1982), and Dan Sewell (1973).  The Fairview High School Class of 1971, Class of 1973, and Class of 1982 funded the grants for the 2024 program.
