2018 Grant Awards
The Fairview Park Education Foundation Board of Trustees approved $5,310.46 in grant awards for teachers and staff of the Fairview Park City Schools in 2018.
The awarded grants included:
REVOLUTIONARY WAR COMES TO LIFE
Grant request submitted by: Lisa Sobera and Laura Toner at Gillis-Sweet School.
$100.00 awarded to Lisa Sobera and Laura Toner at Gillis-Sweet School to hire Mr. Dave Zeih to represent a British soldier during the Revolutionary War. “Mr. Zeih makes the Revolutionary War come to life so the students can form a better understanding of both sides of the war”. This presentation is made to the fourth grade students.

STEM CODING ROBOT
Grant request submitted by: Ann Mangan at the Early Education Center
$299 awarded to Ann Mangan at the Early Education Center to purchase the STEM Coding Robot Mouse Classroom Set to help students with coding. “ With STEM Coding Robot Mouse, students explore the basic needs of animals and work through the Design Engineering Process, as they design code to demonstrate their knowledge of everything a mouse needs to survive.”

TRIBE COFFEE CO. – COFFEE CART
Grant request submitted by: Claire Kohl and Emma McHugh at Lewis F. Mayer Middle School
$576.46 awarded to Claire Kohl and Emma McHugh at Lewis F. Mayer Middle School to fund the “Tribe Coffee Co.-Coffee Cart”. This will enable special needs students an opportunity to start a school-wide coffee business for teachers. “The project will be cross-curricular, involving real-world practice in English, math, science, and social studies, as well as engaging students in social and communicative skills”.

SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
Grant request submitted by: Claire Kohl and Andy Slack at Lewis F. Mayer Middle School
$640 awarded to Claire Kohl and Andy Slack at Lewis F. Mayer Middle School to fund a social-emotional student development program. The purpose of this program is “to help students learn and foster coping skills and strategies using art therapy through the Beck Center Coping Skills program provided to students during the school day”. The art therapy is provided by a mental health professional.

ACTIVITY LEARN
Grant request submitted by: Rebecca Hicks, David Latkovic, Carli Vandrak, Isis Prior, and Craig Cohan
$695 awarded to Rebecca Hicks, David Latkovic, Carli Vandrak, Isis Prior, and Craig Cohan at Fairview High School to purchase “Activity Learn” an online program that provides students with individualized pacing opportunities in several content areas. This program will give “students access to a plethora of literature that enables them to extend learning beyond the classroom and foster intellectual curiosity”.

NATURALLY PLAYFUL CLUBHOUSE CLIMBER
Grant request submitted by: Michelle Maeder and Beth Haney
$550 awarded to Michelle Maeder and Beth Haney at Fairview Park Early Education Center to purchase a “Naturally Playful Clubhouse Climber” for the toddler class. The purpose of the climber is to “have the children develop and strengthen large motor skills, especially balance and maneuverability, while in the outdoor learning environment”

TO FOSTER CRITICAL THINKING AND PROBLEM SOLVING
Grant request submitted by: Lori Oxley and Andy Slack
$1,200 awarded to Lori Oxley and Andy Slack at Mayer Middle School and Fairview High School to foster critical thinking and problem solving skills. This project is a three-part program for Special Education students consisting of: a speaker presenting a one-day hands-on seminar on critical thinking for parents and students, a visit to an Escape Room for the students, AND designing an Escape Room at Fairview High School. “The focus of this event is on soft skill development in collaboration, improving mental stamina and grit, contributing as a team member, and becoming an independent creative problem solver”.

MATH RELATED BOOKS FOR LIBRARY
Grant request submitted by: Mary Jo Cooper
$750 awarded to Mary Jo Cooper, Library Media Specialist, at Gilles-Sweet Elementary School to purchase math related books for the library. These literature books directly correlate to the math topics in the math textbooks in grades 1-5. The purpose of this project is to help students “increase awareness of how math is used in the real world and in their daily lives”.

SUPPLIES FOR THE ROBOTICS TEAM
Grant request submitted by: Andy Bruening
$500 awarded to Andy Bruening at Mayer Middle School and Fairview High School to purchase supplies for the Fairview Park Robotics Team. The Robotics Team is an after-school activity for students interested in the field of robotics. Participation in the team encourages students to pursue S.T.E.A.M. interests “and learn the basics of project management”.
The Fairview Park Education Foundation provides grants for the enrichment of the Fairview Park City public schools for the enrichment of school curriculum, the enhancement of instruction, and the implementation of other appropriate activities to achieve specific education goals. The grants are funded through individual donations and through proceeds from various fundraisers.
